About

Where Zen meets modern science

A Japan-based community, now in its seventh year, reading the Buddha’s awakening and modern physics as two accounts of one reality.

Who we are

One inquiry, sought honestly

Peace of Life was founded in 2019 on a simple conviction: that the deepest question of modern science — who caused the Big Bang, and why are we here — and the awakening of the Buddha are one and the same inquiry, which can be pursued honestly and lived in ordinary daily life.

Now in its seventh year, the community gathers several hundred members through the year for lectures and residential retreats, held at historic venues across Japan, among them the Imperial Hotel and the grounds of Meiji Jingu.

Our stance

What we are — and are not

We are

A community of inquiry and practice. We study the Buddha’s awakening — the four stages of enlightenment, and Juki, the vow that begins a universe — alongside the findings of modern physics, and we aim to live what we learn.

We are not

A religious movement in the conventional sense. Peace of Life asks no one to leave their own path behind; its work is a patient, open inquiry, carried out where Zen and contemporary science meet.

What we do

How the community gathers

i.

Lectures

Regular talks by ZEN Master Ken, held at historic venues in Japan, open to members and guests.

ii.

Retreats

Residential gatherings for deeper study and practice, away from the pace of everyday life.

iii.

Community

Several hundred members who study, practice, and support one another through the year.

Where the search leads

On 1 November 2026, that search returns to its source — a formal Dharma talk at the Mahabodhi Temple, where the Buddha awakened.
